Britain Orders Immediate Closure of Iranian Embassy in London

Britain's foreign secretary William Hague said Wednesday that the UK was ordering the immediate closure of the Iranian embassy in London, and Britain was shutting down its embassy in Tehran.

"We require the immediate closure of the Iranian embassy in London and that all Iranian diplomatic staff must leave the United Kingdom within the next 48 hours," Hague told British lawmakers in a statement to parliament. "If any country makes it impossible for us to operate on their soil they cannot expect to have a functioning embassy here."

The closure follows the storming of the British Embassy in Tehran on Tuesday by around 200 hard-line student protesters.

Hague said Tuesday's attack was carried out by protesters from a student Basij militia organization with links to the Iranian regime.

He added that "the idea that the Iranian authorities could not have protected our embassy or that this assault could have taken place without some degree of regime consent is fanciful."

Hague confirmed that the British Embassy in Tehran was now closed and that staff had left Iranian soil.

Hague said Britain's decision to close the Iranian embassy did not amount to the complete severing of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

He said despite Tuesday's attack, continued diplomatic communications between UK and Iran remained "desirable," but warned that the attack on Britain's embassy would not be tolerated.

"These events are a grave violation of the Vienna Convention, which states that a host state is required to protect the premises of a diplomatic mission against any intrusion, damage or disturbance," he said. "This is a breach of international responsibilities of which any nation should be ashamed."

How to Avoid Vaginal Tears

Global B2B buy sell marketplace: http://www.bytrade.com

By Julie Revelant

vaginal_tearing.jpgIf you’re having a baby, you’ve probably heard the word “tear” and shuddered at the thought that this might happen to you. Yet be rest assured that they’re not only easy to recover from, but quite common—tears that require stitches occur in approximately one third of vaginal deliveries in the United States.

“When you have a baby, particularly for the first time, nothing that large has ever had to stretch the vagina quite so much,” according to Dr. Alyssa Dweck, a board-certified OB-GYN and co-author of V is for Vagina.

Read on to find out where and why these tears occur, and what you can do to avoid them.

Where You Might Tear

Tears usually occur around the perineum, the area between the vaginal opening and the anus and are classified by severity:

• First-degree tears are superficial and may not even require stitches

• Second-degree tears are more extensive and involve the muscles

• Third-degree tears involve the anal sphincter, which allows the body to involuntarily control the leakage of stool

• A fourth-degree tear, which goes into and through the rectum, is the most severe tear and takes longer to recover from

Sometimes tears happen around the urethra or through the clitoris, in which case, your provider may make a surgical cut in the perineum, also known as an episiotomy, to avoid this from happening.

Why You Might Tear

The likelihood that you will tear often times depends on the size of your baby, the size of your pelvis, and the baby’s position. Having a vacuum or forceps-assisted delivery can also increase your chances and having an episiotomy not only increases your chances, but it can extend an existing tear into the rectum. Although the medical community cautions providers from using these interventions except when medically necessary, it’s a good idea to find out from your provider how often she performs this type of delivery and under what circumstances.

The position you give birth in is also important. Lying flat on your back with your legs pulled back or in stirrups puts too much pressure on the perineum. “If you stretch fabric really tightly, and then you put a force behind it, it would more likely tear than if there’s a little bit more give,” according to Dr. Catherine Ruhl, Director of Women’s Health Programs at the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses, and a practicing nurse-midwife. Upright positions like standing, squatting or even sitting up in bed are best.

The way you push can also help. Holding your breath during contractions and then pushing as hard as you can, is actually associated with a higher rate of tearing, studies show.

According to Ruhl, even if you’re dilated 10 centimeters, you don’t have to push right away. “Laboring down,” or resting and allowing your contractions to bring the baby farther down the birth canal before pushing can prevent tears. “It’s important for the woman to be in charge and to wait for her to find a real urge to push and then to let her push as she wants,” she says. “This is especially important when a woman has an epidural as the decreased sensation may block her natural urge to push.”

Studies also show that perineal massage during pregnancy, particularly if it’s your first time giving birth, can help.

How to Recover

“The vagina and the vulva are very forgiving places,” according to Dweck who says that because the blood supply is so rich, tears heal quickly. If you need stitches, your provider will most likely use dissolvable ones and using ice packs for the first 24 hours after giving birth can prevent swelling. You’ll also be given a peri bottle with warm water which cleanses your perineum and eases any discomfort when you urinate. Sitting in a sitz bath, a small shallow tub filled with water, draws out excess fluid and relaxes the muscles and using witch hazel pads can help with the swelling. Motrin, Tylenol, or a prescription pain reliever can also help.

Your provider will give you the go ahead to resume normal activity including exercise and sex at your 6 week check-up. Some women who have third and fourth degree tears sometimes experience residual pain or have tissue underneath the skin that doesn’t heal properly. If you’re still having pain after just a few weeks, make an appointment to see your doc.

Natural Cold and Flu Remedies

Global B2B buy sell marketplace: http://www.bytrade.com

By Chris Kilham

flower_med_hunter.jpgHave you ever wondered why the colder months are also the season for colds and flu? People spend more time indoors, air circulation is poorer, and there is far greater chance of catching airborne germs. Put one child with a cold in a room full of other children, and you can create a cold epidemic in just days. Once again, cold season has commenced, with coughing, sinus congestion, and the dullness that colds impart. The same is true for flu. Fortunately, natural remedies can help you to battle colds and flu more quickly, and to reduce the severity of symptoms. Here are a few of my favorite, side effect-free natural remedies.

Ginger

Fresh ginger root is my favorite pick for cold care. Buy ginger fresh (preferably organic) and cut a piece about an inch and a half long. Either chop the ginger finely, or grate it. Put the finely minced ginger into a tea strainer, and put the tea strainer in a cup. Pour fresh boiling water into the cup. Let the tea sit for five minutes. Remove the tea strainer, and squeeze the ginger with a spoon to get a bit more of the ginger juice into the cup. Flavor with a spoonful of honey, and sip. Ginger contains a group of compounds called sesquiterpenes, which kills rhinoviruses, the agents that cause colds. So when you have a cold, several bracing cups of fresh ginger root tea can help you to reduce the severity and duration of that unwanted event. Ginger tea also helps to relieve a sore throat. Drink three or more cups daily until you are well. For children, dilute the concentration of the tea, so it’s less spicy.

Garlic

Sometimes called the stinking rose, garlic has long occupied a special place in natural healing. This fragrant and pungent member of the allium family enhances overall cardiovascular health, fights various types of cancer cells well, and is a potent immune booster. But garlic goes beyond this, actually killing many of the types of bacteria that cause food poisoning. Heavy use of garlic is prevalent in places and cultures where food preparation hygiene may be poor, and where refrigeration is not always available. Adding fresh-pressed garlic into food, or cooking with garlic, may prevent sickness due to bacterial contamination. And if you have a cold, press a clove of garlic into a cup of hot water, add the juice of a lemon, mix in a teaspoon of honey, and drink it down. This shot to the immune system will help you to get rid of the cold faster.

Echinacea

A traditional remedy used by Native Americans, echinacea is also known as purple cone flower. Many human clinical studies have shown that echinacea, a traditional herbal cold remedy, does in fact reduce both the severity and the duration of colds. Your best echinacea remedies are those made from fresh echinacea. Try the Gaia Herbs brand or the Herb Pharm brand of fluid echinacea extracts, or Echinaforce by A. Vogel. You can also get echinacea as an herbal tea. Try Traditional Medicinal’s Echinacea Plus.

Essential oils

One way to decongest clogged sinuses is to breathe the vapors of certain aromatic substances including menthol or eucalyptus. The Swiss company Olbas makes a couple of terrific products in this category. One, the Olbas inhaler, contains menthol, oils of peppermint, cajeput and eucalyptol, one of the components of eucalyptus. You just apply the inhaler to your nose, take a nice breath, and the vapors open up the sinuses.

Umcka

When I was conducting plant research in South Africa, I was introduced to a funny-sounding plant called umcka. This is a traditional San tribal name for the South African herb Pelargonium sidoides. Especially when taken at the onset of a cold, umcka can cut the entire misery short. Human clinical studies show that umcka works well. My two favorite brands are umcka by Nature’s Way, and Cold Check by EuroPharma, which contains both umcka and another cold-fighting herb, andrographis.

Oscillococcinum

Don’t even try to pronounce this one! Just call it “oscillo” for short. Did you know that almost all flu comes from birds, mostly ducks? It’s true. This is why the national flu research center keeps tens of thousands of samples of duck organs in its lab refrigerators. Made from a highly dilute extract of the heart and liver of the Barbary duck, oscillo helps to reduce both the duration and severity of the flu, especially when taken at the first signs of sickness.

Elderberry

In various human studies, elderberry has demonstrated anti-flu activity. This is due to a group of antioxidant flavonoids in elderberry that bind to the influenza virus and prevent infection. While some health authorities question the real efficacy of elderberry as a flu-fighter, it does demonstrate some value. One study of elderberry extract and the (scary) H1N1 virus showed that the antioxidant compounds in the berries inhibit the proliferation of that virus. While further work must be done on this, the study suggests that at least, elderberry may help to reduce the activity of this flu. Hippocrates, widely recognized as one of the greatest pioneers of medicine, called elder his medicine chest, and he knew what he was talking about.

Do the Math -- Gingrich Is Now the GOP Front Runner

Global B2B buy sell marketplace: http://www.bytrade.com

By Douglas E. Schoen

There is a new front runner in the Republican nomination for president, one who has frankly not been recognized as a front runner, given the nature of the media and the reporting on the contrast. That front runner is Newt Gingrich, who in the new Iowa Insider Advantage poll has a 15% lead over Mitt Romney. That lead, which is well beyond the margin of error, suggests that he is now in a commanding position in Iowa, which could well lead to a victory of the size and scope that Mike Huckabee won four years ago.

But beyond that, Gingrich is 28 points ahead in South Carolina, the third primary, which would be a landslide victory for the former Georgia Congressman should the numbers hold up.

With New Hampshire now within 10 points, and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney running ahead of Gingrich only here, there is every reason to believe that the combination of the Manchester Union Leader's endorsement, and the former Speaker's now likely victory in Iowa will tighten the race even more in the Granite state.

Further, given the newly released Florida numbers, which show Gingrich with a commanding 24 point lead over Mitt Romney, there is every reason to believe that the race has swung decisively in the direction of the former Speaker. The former Speaker is benefitting not only from superlative debate performances, but also from the decline and perhaps fall of Herman Cain. Polls show that the former Cain voters are breaking by at least 2 to 1, and in some cases 3 to 1, for former speaker Gingrich.

Put another way, if Gingrich wins Iowa, is very competitive in New Hampshire, and wins South Carolina and Florida in landslides, the race will effectively be over.

To be sure, there are a lot of "ifs" here, but all of the momentum is now with Gingrich. At the very least, winning 3 of the 4 contests will give Gingrich a huge leg up on the contest for the nomination, and will mean that he is in, at the very least, a commanding position.

Moreover, the last two national polls that have been released by CNN and Quinnipiac show Gingrich with a 4 point lead nationally in Republican trial heat, as his position has improved by roughly 1.5% per week.

What does all of this mean for the race?

First, the Romney campaign has got to go into attack mode quickly. They simply cannot afford to sit back and get trounced in Iowa and South Carolina, and face the prospect of a substantial defeat in Florida.

It also means that Gingrich, so far, has not been adversely impacted by his comments on immigration last week, as the two polls that Insider Advantage did in South Carolina and Iowa were done after he made his comments in the National Security debate on the need for a path to legalization for illegal immigrants.

The prospect of a race between Gingrich and Obama should suggest the degree of volatility there is in the national race, and the possibility of additional candidates from the left, right, and most of all, center, entering the contest.

But more fundamentally, the most recently released polling shows that the world on the Republicans side has probably changed, and those changes are going to impact on the strategies of President Obama, and most importantly, Mitt Romney.

Mitt Romney's campaign is now in desperate trouble-- more desperate than ever before!

Propelling Ground Meat to Presidental Status

Global B2B buy sell marketplace: http://www.bytrade.com

By Elena Ferretti

groundupburgerfakeNancy Reagan adored designer Bill Blass’ meatloaf, which she ate at New York City’s legendary high-society mecca, Mortimer’s. That it was the creation of Blass had everything to do with it because back then meatloaf was a Blue Plate Special at “family restaurants.” It was too ordinary, too common for any serious restaurant to consider.

But even way back when, the people who knew, knew that meatloaf was more than meat for the masses.

In 1963 food authority Craig Claiborne wrote: “It may be inconceivable to the vast majority of the nation’s beef eaters, but there are countless people of reasonable mind who willingly choose a lean portion of ground meat to a whole Porterhouse.” Because, he said there was almost no herb or spice that “would not marry handsomely with a meritorious meatloaf.”

Cookbook author and writer James Villas picks up where Claiborne left off. His ode to ground beef, pork, poultry and seafood, From the Ground Up: Hundreds of Amazing Recipes from Around the World for Ground Meats (Wiley) is like Hamburger Helper for serious cooks.

Propelling ground meat to its proper station in the food world is a lifelong passion; he was one of the people who urged Bernbaum to serve meatloaf at Mortimer’s. Ground meat belongs in the pantheon of fine meat, Villas argues. People think of ground meat as only hamburger, sausage or meatloaf, he sighs. They forget, he says, the glory days of Salisbury Steak.

We’ve destroyed some very good ground meat dishes like Salisbury Steak, says Villas. We “ruined” it with “gloppy canned soup,” abused it with “that glop, with bouillon cubes, with the wrong cuts of meat.” Real Salisbury Steak is not the stuff made by school lunch ladies. It’s the stuff of ladies-who-lunch.

Villas’ version, ground round with beef broth, bacon, Worcestershire sauce, onion and shiitake mushrooms transforms Salisbury Steak into the elegant dish it once was. It’s like fading movie star with a fabulous face-lift.

Villas’ book is a global ground meat exploration: French Rillettes; Lake Superior Mincemeat; Italian Crostini; Scandinavian Meatballs; Cornish Pasties; Greek Pastitsio; English Farmhouse Bangers; a smattering of international chili recipes; Mexican Montezuma Pie; Shanghai Lion’s Head; and Southern Beef Pot Pie with Cheese Biscuit Crust.

Some recipes appeal more to foodies and the merely curious, like Scottish Deviled Kidney Spread—use veal or lamb kidneys rather that “more robust beef or pork kidneys”—and Scandinavian Jellied Veal Loaf, “chill overnight till firm.”

Others are crowd-pleasers like Bacon and Blue Cheese Dip, “so good that I could almost make a sandwich with it” and Retro Rice and Tuna Casserole. “I stand solidly behind the integrity” he writes of this brown rice, green peas, tuna and pimentos recipes flavored with, yes, Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom soup.

Villas’ egalitarian approach means he’s as equally at home in high-society eateries as in dives, eating handcrafted charcuterie or sipping canned soups.

He recommends grinding your own meat, easy with a heavy-duty blender or a mixer with a grinder attachment. Custom-grinding is addictive; my Mom’s been doing it for sixty-plus years and shows no sign of stopping. Villas recommends chuck and round for good burgers and 100% sirloin for great, albeit, pricey ones. Grinding lets you, not the slaughterhouse, control what goes into your meat.

His Sherry Turkey Hash Cake combines ground turkey with onion, pepper, celery, potatoes, sherry and cream to solve post-holiday turkey blues. Form into cakes, dust with flour, dip in egg, roll in breadcrumbs and fry in a skillet.

Croquettes, says Villas, give new life any poultry or ham leftovers. Forget their rep as grease-laden bricks. Undeserved, he says. They lend themselves to and “endless” array of flavorings and techniques, he says, hoping to spark a croquette renaissance. Shallow-frying in three to four inches of oil and butter keeps them light. “Never,” he thunders, “inundate the croquette in liquid fat,” i.e. deep-fry.

For Christmas he suggests making a veal and pork meatloaf and “wrapping the entire damn thing in bacon.” Remove bacon to get a crust, crisp up the bacon and serve on the side. “It doesn’t get any better or easier for the holidays,” he says.

Villas tastily played out his previous passions in Pig: King of the Southern Table (Wiley) and The Bacon Cookbook (Wiley.) This book in many ways is a return to the hearty, needs-no-improvement pre-WWII American cooking that your grandmother used to make.

In Villas’ hands ground meat is no longer the Rodney Dangerfield of the meat world.

E-Business Models For Home Businesses

The Net-only model

This is the toughest model for success, but its not out of possibility by any means.  The roughest aspect of the pure dot com is that it's usually launched by a business novice.  Lack of business experience is  the single reason this model is difficult.  The Net-only company is typically run by an entrepreneur who has little background running the functions of a small business, from budgets and marketing to staff management and customer service.

The solution to this challenge is to bring in a grown-up with domain and business experience.  In other words, for a fishing site, make sure you bring in a retired small business owner who is an avid trout fisher to serve on your management team.

The Web as a business addition

This is a play by a company already experiencing success as a traditional company.  Lands End is an example of a company that has successfully expanded its business onto the Internet.  Like most catalogs, the company began doing little more than putting their catalog pages online.

Over the past couple of years, though, the company figured out how to take its brick business and transform it into a successful Web effort.  This requires a real understand of how Internet buyers shop and what they expect from a great Web retailer.  Lands End wasted little time creating a site for Internet buyers that serves their needs with the right product mix and great service support.  The foundation for this initiative is the past successful experience of the company

The Key To Success--Positive Attitude

Global B2B buy sell marketplace: http://www.bytrade.com

A Diverse Type Of Post

For those of you who follow my posts, I regularly deal with business mechanics and less on the positive mental attitude. But I believed it might be a good idea to write about one of the most fundemental issues there is in driving success. There is no doubt that there are people who've risen to the top with their business's and had a bad attitude, however it truly is the rare exception.

If you think about it, a bad attitude will get you in trouble before you start the day. If you observe the world from a negative viewpoint it is going to impact the way you treat clients, staff, vendors and partners. That negative treatment will effect your ability to get their support and buy in on your ideas, plans, strategies and execution of those plans. It may also cause your clients to shy away as well.

The sad part is that more often than not, we do not even realize how negative we are until we stand back and consider it.

Folks Can Sense A Positive Attitude Or A Negative One

It's amazing how well people can actually sense your attitude. They also can sense your degree of self-confidence as well. I used to believe that all that stuff about standing up straight when you're talking on the phone or making sure you smile when you talk did not make any sense until I tried it.

Because I worked with high end businesses, selling multimillion dollar software packages, it was tough to generate appointments on the phone. So, I figured I had nothing to lose by standing up, getting dressed up to make the call and thinking positively about how the outcome was going to go. I was surprised, because starting that day and every day after that when I was on the phone, I had no trouble getting appointments set up. I'm not going to say that every one I talked to was ready to meet with me. But I was able to get several appointments set up every day that I got on the phone. Prior to that, I used to be lucky if I obtained one appointment in a full day of calling.

A Story Regarding Attitude

I heard this story from one of my mentors when I was still a young guy (that was a long time ago). He talked about a new salesman who had joined his company. In an attempt to assist all of their new sales people build confidence, they'd send them to the headquarters of a customer that will always purchase something.

Doing that would give the salesperson a first sale and help them begin to build a positive attitude. Before each salesperson visited the office to close their "in the bank" contract, they were told, that under no circumstances to take no as an answer form the potential client. They were advised to stick with it because the client would ultimately purchase, if you just stayed with it.

The new salesman was no different. They gave him the address and sent him on his way. At the back of his mind the salesperson kept saying to himself, this buyer will buy, just don't take no for an answer. So when he arrived at the office, he sat down with the buyer and from the minute he began to discuss his product line they locked horns. It was a real duel of wits.

The potential client kept saying no and the salesperson kept thinking of ways to keep the conversation going and coming up with a way to add value for the client using the products he had to sell. Well, it was a long battle, but after 4 hours, the salesman won the buyer over and left with a modest order and a pat on the back from the client. In fact the client told the new salesman that he appreciated his approach and wanted him to come back in a couple of weeks to discuss some other products that he would need.

Tools to Control Your Online Reputation Actively

Global B2B buy sell marketplace: http://www.bytrade.com

Good or Evil?

From a marketing perspective, we have the capability to reach more people in remote corners of the world than ever before, making use of the awesome reach of the Internet to connect with our blogs, videos, and shopping carts that have no physical limitations. The flip side of that coin is that we now inhabit a world where anonymous people can go for their 15 minutes of fame as impromptu authors, video producers and critics, and that can spell trouble for your organization.

Google, Yahoo and other search engines give huge credibility to sites like Wikipedia in the spirit of full disclosure, especially on big business. Trouble is, fact checking ain't what it used to be if indeed it happens at all. Loud online voices offering great buzz on your goods and services can provide a fantastic bump even if unjustified by reality. Bully for you! The impact of spiteful haters can cost you prospects, customers and dollars to an incredible extent also.

The Most Common Keyword in Modern Business

What do you think is the most often used keyword today in business? This isn't a trick question or a gag. It is in fact the word, "keyword". Think about it. There is so much guidance about SEO and online marketing that focuses on how people browse the web, in particular, Google. That means controlling what keywords you use to advertise your website and be found, trying to mirror what people are searching for and in a unique enough way to minimize competition. Subsequently we have long tail keywords which are phrases like "How to winterize your boat" so that when someone does eventually look for that, our page or Adwords ad is right there to be discovered.

To keep track of your online reputation, keywords are also what you use to determine who and what is being said about you. The easy way to do this initially is obviously to Google your company name. You’re going to find your web pages to be sure, but if there is bad stuff available you’re going to see that too. If it falls on page 1 of Google returns, you have a developing situation.

Google Alerts

Google alerts enable you to pick keywords relative to, in this case, your business name and Google will email you instances when they occur online as indexed by the Google search engine. Go to google.com/alerts to set this up. Depending on the size and online notoriety of your company, you can modify the frequency of these email alerts from daily to weekly. There are a couple of refining options. Choosing type = 'Everything' will monitor all the buzz about whatever keywords you type in, comma delimited. For most small businesses, a weekly notification should be adequate.

Here are some points for what you might want to check to see what your customers might find:

  • Your business name, including any divisions or alternative names as it applies

  • Your competitors

  • Frequent misspellings of your business name

  • Your flagship product names, part numbers and trade names

  • Your key executive names-- bad juju on your top people will reflect badly on your business

Social Oomph

Google Alerts keeps track of the Google database. Social Oomph (socialoomph.com) allows you to track tweets. You should create a free account and then go to Monitors\/Keyword Alert Emails on the left hand menu. You are allowed to set up to 50 keywords or phrases to scour the tweet-o-sphere for and email you summaries either daily or every twelve hours.

The keyword tips are the same as for Google Alerts. The cool thing about monitoring Twitter chatter is that it has a very real-time component to it. If hostility is being spread, you may have the ability to join the ongoing discussion and correct the record or counter the conversation when it is at its most poisonous and influential to your business reputation.

LinkedIn Signal

Signal is a tool currently under development by LinkedIn in conjunction with Twitter, using a similar search on discussions groups, shares and posted answers. Access it by logging into LinkedIn and going to  linkedin.com/signal. This is a bit cumbersome with the filters and for most results, look up your name and company without the filters box selected. This is especially useful for product launches or branding efforts you might have to see if there is a buzz on LinkedIn among professionals. Unfortunately the search box appears to have no Boolean capability to add multiple search words separated by commas or expressions like' +' or 'OR'.

How to Resolve Workplace Clash

Global B2B buy sell marketplace: http://www.bytrade.com

Understand the situation. Few situations are exactly as they seem or as presented to you by others. Before you try to settle the conflict insure you have investigated both sides of the issue.

Acknowledge the problem. I remember an exchange between two board members. One member was frustrated with the direction the organization was taking. He told the other, “Just don’t worry about it. It isn’t that important.” Keep in mind what appears to be a small issue to you can be a major issue with another. Acknowledging the frustration and concerns is an important step in resolving the conflict.

Be patient and take your time. The old adage, “Haste makes waste,” has more truth in it than we sometimes realize. Take time to evaluate all information. A too-quick decision does more harm than good when it turns out to be the wrong decision and further alienating the individual involved

Avoid using coercion and intimidation. Emotional outbursts or coercing people may stop the problem temporarily, but do not fool yourself into thinking it is a long-term solution. Odds are the problem will resurface. At that point not only will you have the initial problem to deal with, but also the angry feelings that have festered below the surface during the interim.

Focus on the problem, not the individual. Most people have known at least one “problematic individual” during their work experience. Avoid your own pre-conceived attitudes about individuals. Person X may not be the most congenial individual or they may just have a personality conflict with someone on your staff. This does not mean they do not have a legitimate problem or issue. Focus on identifying and resolving the conflict. If, after careful and thorough analysis, you determine the individual is the problem, then focus on the individual at that point.

Establish guidelines. Before conducting a formal meeting between individuals, get both parties to agree to a few meeting guidelines. Ask them to express themselves calmly—as unemotionally as possible. Have them agree to attempt to understand each other’s perspective. Tell them if they violate the guidelines the meeting will come to an end.

Keep the communication open. The ultimate goal in conflict resolution is for both parties to resolve the issue between themselves. Allow both parties to express their viewpoint, but also share your perspective. Attempt to facilitate the meeting and help them pinpoint the real issue causing conflict.

Act decisively. Once you have taken time to gather information, talked to all the parties involved, and reviewed all the circumstances, make your decision and act. Don’t leave the issue in limbo. Taking too long to make a decision could damage your credibility and their perception of you. They may view you as either too weak, too uncaring, or both, to handle the problem. Not everyone will agree with your decision, but at least they will know where you stand.

Are You Using Social Media to Your Advantage?

By Suzanne Zionts

social media facebook computer.jpgNavigating through the ever-changing landscape of social media has been a key challenge for small business owners trying to brand themselves in this uncertain economy.

Earlier this month, small business owners got yet another social media tool from Google+ in the form of branded pages.

Kirsten Wright, the social marketing director for Social5150.com, a social media agency, took some time to speak with FOX Business after presenting at Blog World, a social media conference in Los Angeles, earlier this month. Wright detailed how small business owners should be using social media to grow their business, and identified the pitfalls many owners make when first venturing into this world.

While it’s hard to keep up with the developments coming out of the social media world, Wright said  it’s important to a business’s growth potential. "I'm a firm believer in reading as much as possible. If you are not staying on top of everything, you are getting further behind."

FBN: What are small businesses doing wrong when using social media?

Wright: The biggest pitfall that small business owners have is that they think social media should not be an investment and have a “we should just have people in administration do our media” mentality. Small businesses need to get to the point where they compete with bigger businesses through social media.

FBN: What are small businesses doing right in their use of social media?

Wright: They are able to be more personable. A lot of bigger brands don’t have the personality of their brands and become too corporate. Small businesses tend to have more leeway, have more fun and still capture personality.

FBN: What is the most important social media tool for business owners?

Wright: Twitter and Facebook are both extremely powerful tools and you have to be on both of them to have a successful cross promotion strategy. One tool that is often overlooked is YouTube, but Twitter and Facebook are the primaries.

FBN: Should small business owners be using Google+?

Wright: A week ago I would have had a different answer….I think that by launching the business pages, if the bigger businesses get involved with this, it will be a great tool. But my word of warning is: If you can’t do Facebook right, stay out of Google+. You are better off building a phenomenal Facebook page.

FBN: What is the biggest misconception when it comes to using social media?

Wright: That it’s free. It is a lot less expensive than traditional media, however, to make social work, it can't be done just for free. You need a solid strategy. You need promotion. You need Facebook applications. A lot of small businesses don't think about Facebook advertising, but it does take a budget to make it work.

FBN: Is there a best way to listen to your customers?

Wright: Twitter is a phenomenal way for a brand to do customer service more effectively. Twitter allows for a quick response, but Facebook provides a longer conversation. The only way it is going to work successfully is if the customer service team is watching and will respond.

FBN: Why do you think some small business owners are afraid of social media?

Wright: So many people are afraid of social media. I work with many consumer brands and they can't say certain things because of legal issues. Social media gives an open door and people can say whatever they want, but you have the ability to manage your brand under legal compliance. I have worked with pharmaceutical brands, and we just make sure everything we do is triple checked. There is almost no brand that can do social on its own. It takes an integrated team to do it.

Report Deems Norway Massacre Suspect Legally Insane

Anders Behring Breivik

A psychiatric report on Anders Behring Breivik found that the confessed gunman is insane and therefore not fit to stand trial over twin attacks that killed 77 people, Norway's VG newspaper said Tuesday.

The VG report was published shortly before Norwegian prosecutors' scheduled news conference to discuss the contents of the psychiatric evaluation products.

The 240-page report, compiled by two psychiatrists, was delivered to the prosecutor's office earlier Tuesday.

"We have no doubt when it comes to our conclusions," one of the experts, Torgeir Husby, told reporters when the document was delivered .

The assessment was made after 13 interviews with Breivik, an interview with his mother and an examination of his medical history. The experts also reviewed police questioning and video from the reconstruction of the shooting rampage on Utoya island, the Dagbladet daily reported.

Breivik, 32, has confessed to carrying out the July 22 twin attacks. First, he detonated a car bomb outside the government buildings in central Oslo that house the offices of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, killing eight people. Then he went on a shooting spree at a youth camp on Utoya island, killing 69 mostly young people.

But he refused to plead guilty, saying that the attacks were "atrocious but necessary" in his campaign against multiculturalism and Muslims in Europe.

The Budget Democrats Don’t Want You to See

By Matt Kibbe

With the embarrassing collapse of the “Super Committee” and its inability to come up with even a nominal $1.2 trillion “cut” from an artificially bloated ten year baseline, budgeting in the nation’s capital has reached a new low.

Remember that this latest failure is on top of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s refusal to pass a budget resolution – the blueprint that sets the roadmap for annual appropriations and program authorizations for the fiscal year – for three years running

Facing an unprecedented $15 trillion in debt, this abdication of Congress’s first responsibility puts at risk any hopes of economic recovery and the futures of our children and grand children, who will literally pay for Washington’s profligate ways with lost opportunities and massive tax burdens.

Given their demonstrated inability to set priorities, why would Senate Democrats block grassroots citizens trying to do it for them?  That’s exactly what happened earlier this month when over 250 citizens traveled to Washington to deliver the findings of the Tea Party Debt Commission (TPDC), a bottom-up crowd-sourced plan to balance the budget and reduce the national debt.

Senator Mike Lee offered to host a meeting in the Russell Senate office building and got approval to do so.  Together, we wanted to offer an alternative to the Super Committee’s secretive conclave, a hearing for We The People to speak, and members of Congress to listen.  With all of us gathered in the Kennedy caucus room, Senate Rules Committee staff, saying that Rules Chairman Charles Schumer had ordered it, kicked us out.

In a video that captured Schumer’s staff ousting us, Senator Lee can be heard asking the question: “Does the First Amendment have no application here?”

The staff first claimed that Lee was violating Senate rules by “simulating a hearing,” despite the fact that Senator Schumer has made a regular practice of holding mock hearings on Senate property.

There was also the odd coincidence that Shaun Parkin, one of the “non-partisan” Rules staffers evicting the group had long worked for Senator Robert Bennett, whom Lee and the Utah Tea Party had ousted in 2010.

Even odder was the ex-post facto decision by the Capitol Police to demand, and receive, a correction to a New York Times report to reflect that security concerns and a mysterious package down the hall that forced an evacuation.  Since e-mails and video demonstrably prove this to be a false account, on who’s behalf did the Capitol police act?

This palace intrigue raises serious questions, but such strong-arm tactics reflect one thing for certain: The Democrats don’t want you to see this citizen’s budget.

The Tea Party plan stands in perfect contrast to the failed Super Committee. The process was completely open and transparent.  Everyone was welcomed to participate.  A series of field hearings across the country asked citizens to take the microphone to offer to the TPDC commissioners – 12 local leaders who volunteered their time to oversee the process – their ideas to balance the budget.  The TPDC also crowd-sourced ideas and priorities online, receiving input from over 50,000 citizens.

Turns out that the American people have plenty of ideas.  Unlike the trimmed sails of the Super Committee, this citizen commission went bold.  Very bold.  We set out to find $9 trillion in savings, and found $9.7 trillion.

Compare that to President Obama’s proposed $2.3 trillion increase in spending over the same period.  We set out to balance the budget in ten years, and did it in four.

President Obama proposes deficits and red ink forever.  We cut total spending as a percentage of GDP to 16 percent from its current 24 percent, actually cutting the national debt.

The Tea Party Debt Commission:

*Repeals ObamaCare.

*Eliminates four cabinet agencies – Energy, Education, Commerce, and HUD -- and dramatically scales back or privatizes many others, including the EPA, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

*Ends farm subsidies, ethanol credits, TARP subsidies and government-provided student loans.

*Saves Social Security for seniors and improves benefits for future generations by shifting to a defined contribution that is controlled by individuals, not government.  This proposal is based on legislation introduced by Rep. Jeff Flake (R-AZ)

*Gives Medicare recipients the same benefits as members of Congress, giving them the choice to opt into the Federal Employees Health Benefit Program (FEHBP).  This is based on Senator Rand Paul’s (R-TN) Congressional Healthcare for Seniors Act.

*Cuts waste and duplication from Defense spending, and eliminate or move all programs from the Pentagon that have nothing to do with national defense.

Many of these changes make good sense regardless of our fiscal situation.  Some are tough choices, decisions viewed in the context of the next generation: Is any one of the programs trimmed or eliminated more important that the future of your children?  This is the indisputable kitchen table logic that so infuriates big spenders of all political stripes.

The fairest criticism to the Tea Party budget is its political feasibility.  Is Washington really able to make these tough changes?  There are paid lobbyists, government employees, crony capitalists and well-heeled “progressives” ready to spring into action to defend every line item in the bloated federal budget.

James Madison warned future generations of Americans about these special interests -- they are the main reason great nations decline and fail.

Today, we will balance the budget and finally get our fiscal house in order only when grassroots Americans beat Washington.  Based on Senator Schumer’s extreme reaction, we must be well on the way to our goal.

How Does Laptop Wi-Fi Affect Male Fertility?

Global B2B buy sell marketplace: http://www.bytrade.com

Man Laptop Trading Stocks Couch Living RoomThe digital age has left men's nether parts in a squeeze, if you believe the latest science on semen, laptops and wireless connections.

In a report in the medical journal Fertility and Sterility, Argentinian scientists describe how they got semen samples from 29 healthy men, placed a few drops under a laptop connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi and then hit download.

Four hours later, a quarter of the sperm were no longer swimming around, compared to just 14 percent from semen samples stored at the same temperature away from the computer.

And nine percent of the sperm showed DNA damage, three-fold more than the comparison samples.

The culprit? Electromagnetic radiation generated during wireless communication, say Conrado Avendano of Nascentis Medicina Reproductiva in Cordoba and colleagues.

"Our data suggest that the use of a laptop computer wirelessly connected to the internet and positioned near the male reproductive organs may decrease human sperm quality," they write in their report.

"At present we do not know whether this effect is induced by all laptop computers connected by Wi-Fi to the internet or what use conditions heighten this effect."

A separate test with a laptop that was on, but not wirelessly connected, found negligible EM radiation from the machine alone.

The findings fuel concerns raised by a few other research teams.

Some have found that radiation from cell phones creates feeble sperm in the lab, for example. And last year urologists described how a man's sitting with a laptop balanced on his knees can crank up the temperature of his scrotum to levels that aren't good for sperm.

So between the heat and the radiation from today's electronic devices, testicles would seem to be hard-pressed.

But that is not at all clear, said Dr. Robert Oates, who has managed to father two kids despite having both a laptop and an iPad.

The president of the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology, Oates told Reuters Health he doesn't believe laptops are a significant threat to male reproductive health.

"This is not real-life biology, this is a completely artificial setting," he said about the new study. "It is scientifically interesting, but to me it doesn't have any human biological relevance."

He added that so far, no study has ever looked at whether laptop use has any influence on fertility or pregnancy outcomes.

"Suddenly all of this angst is created for real-life actual persons that doesn't have to be," said Oates, also of Boston Medical Center.

According to the American Urological Association, nearly one in six couples in the US have trouble conceiving a baby, and about half the time the man is at the root of the problem.

While the impact of modern technology is still murky, lifestyle does matter, researchers say.

Earlier this month, a report in Fertility and Sterility showed that men who eat a diet rich in fruit and grains and low in red meat, alcohol and coffee have a better shot at getting their partner pregnant during fertility treatment.

"You should be keeping yourself healthy," including staying lean, eating healthy foods, exercising, not taking drugs and not smoking, agreed Oates.

And for those laptop worries, he mused, "I don't know how many people use laptops on their laps anyway."

How to Prevent Cold and Flu

By Stacey Colino

640_Depressed
Why we get sick and how to stay healthy during cold and flu season.

Here are some commonly asked questions and answers.

Q. Can flying on an airplane make you sick?

A. "Yes," says Bruce Polsky, chief of the division of infectious diseases at St. Luke’s–Roosevelt Hospital Center, in New York City. "Especially if you’re sitting within six feet of someone who is sneezing, coughing, and spewing germs into the dry air."

Because the air is recirculated in the close quarters of the plane’s cabin, certain kinds of germs may stay suspended, and you can end up breathing them in. Drink lots of water, and consider using a saline nasal spray to keep your mucous membranes moist.

Q. Can your toothbrush or lipstick reinfect you after you’ve been sick?
A. It’s not likely. “If you’ve just come out of a cold, don’t toss it,” says Neil Schachter, a professor of pulmonary and critical care at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, in New York City. “Once you’ve had a particular viral illness, you’re protected from it.”

Q. Can you get sick from touching a doorknob?
A. Yes. Germs last longer than you think. “Viruses can survive up to three days on surfaces and inanimate objects,” says Chuck Gerba, a professor of environmental microbiology at the University of Arizona in Tucson. That’s why it’s a good idea to carry your own pen. To reduce the number of germs, be sure to zap hot spots (the phone, for instance) regularly at home and at work with a disinfecting product

Q. Can you catch the same cold or flu twice in the same season?
A. You can’t get exactly the same one, as your body will have developed antibodies to it. But “cold and flu viruses mutate, so there are subtly different forms of the virus,” says Caroline Rudnick, an assistant professor of community and family medicine at St. Louis University. “Getting one type doesn’t protect you from another.” Even if you’ve had the flu vaccine, if a different strain of the flu virus is going around, you could catch it.

Q. Is it safe to exercise with a cold?
A. "Do a 'neck check': If your symptoms are in or above your neck―say, if you have a stuffy nose, a headache, and a mildly sore throat and you’re sneezing―it’s fine to work out," Schachter says. "But if your symptoms extend below the neck―if you have a cough, a fever, body aches, or chills―take a break from exercising until you feel better."

Q. Can going outside with wet hair in the winter make you sick?
A. Exposure to an infection, not cold temperatures, can make you sick. “But if your body gets cold, it could get physically stressed because it’s using a lot of energy to try to stay warm, and you might be more likely to catch an infection,” Rudnick explains. To avoid stressing your body unnecessarily, dry your hair before going out in the cold, or wear a hat.

What Makes You Vulnerable to Colds and Flus
Normally your body’s barriers, including your skin and the linings of your airways and gastrointestinal tract, keep invaders out. But low immunity, contact with a heavy germ load, high stress, and some surprising factors can increase your chances of getting sick.

Having fewer illnesses in childhood could affect your health as an adult. Paradoxically, people who were frequently sick with viral infections as children typically have greater immunity and are susceptible to fewer infections as adults. “Antibodies last a lifetime,” says James A. Wilde, an infectious-disease specialist and the director of the pediatric emergency department at the Medical College of Georgia, in Augusta. When your child is sick with her third cold of the season, remind yourself that it may be helpful to her in the long run.

Cold temperatures and low humidity, indoors and out, can irritate or damage your airways. Air pollution, indoor dust, and ash from fireplaces can also act as irritants, causing inflammation and making it easier for germs to enter your system, says Russell Robertson, chair of the department of family medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University, in Chicago.

Smoking can make you prone to bacterial and viral infections. “Smoking damages the linings of the nose and throat, which not only offer barrier protection but also have a coating of fine filaments, called cilia, on the surface,” says Neil Schachter, a professor of pulmonary and critical care at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, in New York City. That’s why smokers tend to have more frequent and worse colds than nonsmokers. Exposure to secondhand smoke can also lower your natural defenses.

Stress, lack of sleep, and poor nourishment can also set you up for getting sick. Stress and fatigue can lower your resistance to infection and increase the intensity of illnesses you do get. (For more on how stress can make you sick, see Manage Your Stress.) But there may be a bit of a lag between a stressful event and when you become ill.

“When you’re in a period of maximal stress, you’re releasing a lot of adrenaline, which keeps you going,” says Bruce Polsky, chief of the division of infectious diseases at St. Luke’s–Roosevelt Hospital Center, in New York City. “Once that stressful stimulus is over or removed, you crash.”

If you’re under long-term stress, you’re especially susceptible to illness, because chronically elevated stress hormones can suppress immune function and lower the activity of germ-fighting white blood cells. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that severe chronic stress―from such things as conflicts with family or friends and unemployment―significantly increases a person’s risk of coming down with a cold.

How to Stay Healthy During Cold and Flu Season
Strengthen your body’s defenses by eating well, drinking lots of water, exercising regularly, and staying away from people who appear sick. If you do get a bug, pamper yourself.
Eat antioxidant-rich foods, such as whole-grain cereals, walnuts, and artichokes, as well as foods packed with omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon. “The antioxidants protect the body’s tissues against stress and inflammation and enhance immune function,” says Cindy Moore, a registered dietitian and the director of nutrition therapy at the Cleveland Clinic. “Omega-3 fatty acids promote blood flow and the production of anti-inflammatory substances,” which also boost immune function.

Take a brisk walk every day. Any kind of moderate daily exercise―such as cycling, swimming, or working out at the gym―can improve lung and immune function. Physical activity enhances the ability of T lymphocytes (white blood cells that attack virus and cancer cells) to ramp up the immune response, says Neil Schachter, a professor of pulmonary and critical care at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, in New York City. But don’t push yourself too hard. Some studies suggest that high-intensity exercise for two or more hours at a time increases stress hormones, which can lead to suppression of the immune system.

Stay three or more feet away from people who are coughing or sneezing. This will keep you outside the immediate spray of their germs, says Chuck Gerba, a professor of environmental microbiology at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly. If you’re not near a sink during the day or you work in a high-germ environment, such as a school, carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with you.

As you’ve been told millions of times, drink lots of water, don’t skimp on sleep, and get a flu shot. The tried-and-true advice still holds. Staying well hydrated keeps the tissues of the respiratory system moist and helps the immune system work properly. Sleep helps the body function at an optimum level. If you get seven to eight hours of rest a night, you’ll be less likely to become sick, and if you do catch something, you’ll recover faster. October through November is the best time to be immunized, even if you’re a healthy adult. If you can’t stand needles, ask your doctor about FluMist, a prescription nasal-spray vaccine that’s as effective as a shot.

Finally, stay home from work when you first feel ill. It’s possible that work-related stress (not to mention commuting) could slow your recovery. Tell your boss that Real Simple said so.

How to Hire the Right Members for Your Sales Team

Global B2B buy sell marketplace: http://www.bytrade.com

By Mary Rosenbaum

Small Business Couple FBNSome of the smartest money you can spend as a small business owner is to hire a good salesperson or sales team.  That was one of the key takeaways from a panel discussion I attended last week hosted by the National Association of Women Business Owners in NYC (NAWBO-NYC).

Small business owners wear many hats, but in reality, how many of these hats fit really well? And even more to the point, how many hats can you wear at the same time and do a great job at all of them? Although it is difficult for owners and founders of companies to relinquish the sales function so they can work on the business, forming the right sales team is one of the most effective ways to grow a business exponentially.

This advice might sound obvious, but when business owners are confronted with the recommendation to hire sales people, these are some of the objections they raise:

  • No one can sell my company/product/service like I can

  • My business will no longer reflect my brand

  • No one will work as hard as I will to make a sale

  • I’m great at sales

All of the above may be true, but you have to decide whether your full time job is to work on the business or in the business. Building a business that is structured so that it can operate without you allows the opportunity to spend more time focusing on the bigger picture of how you want your business to grow and what you need to do to get there.  The added bonus of all this is that when your business is structured for growth, you create an asset that can eventually be sold.

Here are some steps to take that can help guide you in the sales team building process:

Hire the skills you need. Are you looking for someone who can bring in new business, or do you need someone who can cultivate existing clients? Be clear on what you need.  Expecting one person to satisfy all your needs is a set up for failure.

  1. Communicate your brand and your company’s brand to your salespeople. Clearly articulate the values in your work place and define your organization’s culture. If your salespeople are aligned with your values and mission, they will be better brand ambassadors for the business. Additionally, when you are all on the same page, the business runs a lot smoother and with far less friction.

  2. Educate your team on your financials. It can be difficult to talk finances with employees, but the conversation needs to happen so your salespeople have an understanding of profitability levels and where they should best invest their time. Make your sales people your strategic partners by allowing them to help define the path for growth.

  3. Compensate your sales people well. Provide sales team members a generous upside to their compensation linked directly to their performance. Since they are your company’s growth engine, don’t be averse to paying them more than you make, especially in the early years.

  4. Admit a bad hiring decision and act on it.  Don’t expect to strike gold the first time around. If you have hired the wrong person for the job act swiftly and try again.  It’s not easy to find the right fit, but don’t be afraid to be stubborn about what you seek in a candidate.

As owner or founder of your business you are probably the best brand ambassador you can find. But running and growing a business takes a lot of time, and if you take on too many roles, there’s a good chance you can’t do the best job you can on any one of them. Create the structure you need so your business can grow the way you want.

The Importance of Personal Finance Planning

  • Global B2B buy sell marketplace: http://www.bytrade.com

  • Identification

    • Personal finance planning is the process by which you set goals and determine a process by which you handle your personal financial portfolio. Many people mistakenly think this solely has to do with retirement planning or investment practices; however, personal financial planning centers on all aspects of your financial life. This might include setting goals for saving, managing a checking account, investments, daily or monthly budgeting, retirement planning and credit management.

    Significance

    • Personal finance planning is important because without it you have no financial direction. This could negatively impact your life in several ways, from an inability to make large purchases because you've neglected to properly manage your credit to a lack of planning for retirement, leaving you with no money with which to spend your golden years. If you don't plan, you cannot have peace of mind regarding your finances, which often governs all other aspects of your life.

    Benefits

    • The benefits of personal finance planning are numerous. Planning ahead means you can pay for your child's college education, make investments that put you on the path to personal wealth, own a home or car, travel and make large purchases, retire later in life and do so comfortably and manage your income properly so that you are comfortable financially.

    Considerations

    • According to Career Success for Newbies, financial planning is not just for the well-off; anyone with any amount of money can put a plan into action to make them more successful when it comes to their finances. If you aren't good at managing your money, consider working with a personal finance professional, particularly if you are trying to plan for retirement. Be realistic when you set goals to ensure that you do not fail in meeting them and plan for your financial reality as it is now and not the one you hope to have in the future.

World Bank head sees ripple effects from euro woes

Global B2B buy sell marketplace: http://www.bytrade.com

    By Scott Malone

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts (Reuters) - Europe's debt crisis threatens to undermine consumer confidence and cut off credit to businesses in the rapidly emerging markets that have been bright spots in an otherwise grim global economy, the head of the World Bank warned on Tuesday.

"While the European and euro zone problems have to be dealt with primarily by Europe, you've got to be aware of the ripple effects of this and the ripple effects can easily become wave effects," Robert Zoellick, the institution's president, said in a talk with students at Harvard University.

Leaders of the euro zone nations have been scrambling to head off a spreading sovereign-debt crisis that has hit the Greek, Italian, Portuguese and Irish economies and threatens to engulf the rest of the 17-nation bloc.

One key risk Zoellick cited is that worries about Europe's troubles will spook consumers in emerging markets, such as China, India and Brazil, that have been far quicker to recover from the private-sector credit crunch of 2008.

"What I was most worried about and remain worried about is the fact that if the problems in consumer confidence ... and business confidence in Europe and the U.S. spread to emerging markets then the domestic demand of those economies would also wither," Zoellick said.

"Keep in mind that over the past five years, two-thirds of the world's global growth has come from emerging markets. So it's not only bad for emerging markets, but it's bad for the world."

Major U.S. multinational companies including General Electric Co and Caterpillar Inc have notched solid profit growth this year in part because strong emerging-market demand offset weakness at home and in Europe.

Another worry is that banks, many of which still bear the scars of the 2008-2009 crisis, will sharply cut back lending as they try to assess the damage that investments in European sovereign debt could do to their balance sheets, said Zoellick, who has headed the World Bank since 2007.

"You have a banking sector that is pulling back fast. Part of this is because of banking regulations and some of this is because they're not sure how to value the sovereign debt. But so what are we seeing? We're seeing trade finance dry up," Zoellick said, adding that he was particularly concerned about the effect this could have on businesses in West and North Africa, Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Zoellick early this month said that development banks led by the World Bank would make up to $200 billion in financing available to poor countries who lose access to credit as a result of Europe's sovereign debt crisis.

    Email Marketing Guidelines and Tips

Global B2B buy sell marketplace: http://www.bytrade.com

  • Set Expectations

    • Before asking people to sign up for your email marketing communications, tell them what they will get. Communicate the benefits of signing up to your emails. Also, let users know how often they can expect to receive the communication piece.

    Give Something of Value

    • According to Smashing Magazine, consider giving some type of reward to users for signing up to receive your email communications such as a free gift, voucher or discount on your product or service. If you're going to give away something of value, let users know as soon as possible in the sign-up process.

    Know the Law

    • The CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 outlines requirements for sending commercial email. There are certain penalties and guidelines for what constitutes "spam," or unwanted email. For example, you can't use false or misleading header information in your emails or use deceptive subject lines, and you must identify the message as an ad, tell recipients where you're located and tell recipients how to opt out of receiving future email from you. Review these guidelines thoroughly before developing any type of email marketing campaign.

    Be Concise and Interesting

    • When reading email, many of your customers and potential customers will simply scan for areas that interest them. The "Email Newsletter Usability Report" from Nielsen Norman Group concluded the average reader skims a newsletter for 51 seconds. For this reason, email messages should be concise. Use simple language over complex language, brief sentences and short paragraphs. Break up content with bullets and numbers. Perhaps most important, ensure your content is relevant and intriguing. This means send emails that your customers want to read. For example, if you sell a dietary supplement, send your email subscribers weekly health tips and recipes rather than just ads for your products.

    Test

    • According to Campaign Monitor, there is continual change among many email providers such as Yahoo!, Hotmail and Gmail, so it's important to test and re-test your email designs on a regular basis. Conduct a quick test every month to make sure your email designs look professional for various email providers.

  • Satellite Image Shows 'Extensively Damaged' Iranian Missile Site

Global B2B buy sell marketplace: http://www.bytrade.com

A Washington-based research group has released a satellite image showing an "extensively damaged" Iranian missile base two weeks after an explosion at the site was reported.

Paul Brannan, a senior research analyst for the Institute for Science and International Security, which specializes in nuclear weapons programs, said some of the buildings at the compound near the city of Bid Kaneh appear to be destroyed following the Nov. 12 explosion, which Iranian authorities have characterized as an accident.

"Some of the destruction seen in the image may have also resulted from subsequent controlled demolition of buildings and removal of debris," Brannan said in a statement. "There do not appear to be many pieces of heavy equipment such as cranes or dump trucks on the site, and a considerable amount of debris is still present."

As such, Brannan said most of the damage seen in the image likely resulted from the Nov. 12 explosion.

ISIS officials recently learned that the blast occurred as Iran achieved a "major milestone" in the development of a new missile. Iran was apparently performing a "volatile procedure" involving a missile engine at the site when the blast occurred, Brannan said.

Another explosion was reported on Monday in Isfahan, which houses another key Iranian nuclear facility. The cause of that incident is not immediately clear.

The Nov. 12 explosion, meanwhile, killed Maj. Gen. Hassan Moghaddam, chief architect of Iran's ballistic missile program. Some reports have claimed that the Israeli Mossad was responsible for the blast, the Jerusalem Post reports.

Brig. Gen. Itay Brun, head of Israel's Military Intelligence Research Directorate, told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Monday that the latest blast could delay Tehran's development of long-range missiles.

"The explosion at the site to develop surface-to-surface missiles could stop or delay activities on that track and in that location, but we must emphasize that Iran has other development tracks in addition to that facility," Brun said, according to the Jerusalem Post.
